I remained concerned about the radiation and asked for a thyroid guard, and she responded like she didn't know of such a thing and said there was no way to guard his neck. She told me the X-ray was low risk to my son but that I should stand out of the room for my own safety!

At the end of April, I took my son to Jamestown ER because he was in respiratory distress, not recovering with albuterol, and needing supplementary oxygen (an episode we'd been through once before). After initial treatments, he was not fully recovering, so we were going to need to transfer to Children's Hospital to keep him on oxygen (basically until a virus took its course).

Have always received prompt, accurate and compassionate care for both myself and family members. They provide an invaluable service to our community, which is an underserved area. Kudos to the great staff and outstanding services that they provide.

While parts of our ER visit were fantastic, I write this negative review to draw attention to egregious disregard of the right of parental consent and patient safety by the nurse performing X-rays (and possibly the doctor advising her).

About 15 minutes later, she walked in and started fitting him with the X-ray lap cover. I walked up, a bit shocked and being very polite but not at all timid, asking her if the doctor thought that he really needed the X-ray. She proceeded as I spoke WITHOUT MY CONSENT to outfit him. She said the doctor said Children's would want the X-rays. (I would have been willing to wait and have the discussion at Children's.) Understanding the situation I was in -- my son being a minor -- I evaluated whether it was worth engaging the subject further and decided to give her my verbal consent, even though she didn't seem to want or need it.

Unfortunately, both respect and reason were lacking. At this point, I do not plan to bring another one of my children to this ER unless it is the closest at the time and my children are dying.

It should be noted that we have successfully refused X-rays several times, all with wonderful outcomes; we have also accepted X-rays where we felt they were necessary, and the only times they were helpful (and conclusive) were to tell us 1) there was not glass in a cut and 2) that the ankle was only sprained; they have NEVER been helpful in respiratory issues.

A nurse entered our room planning to give X-rays to him, and I asked her, very politely, about her intentions and told her I would prefer not to give him X-rays unless absolutely necessary. She told me very respectfully that I had the right to refuse X-rays -- major kudos for her honest, proper response! I told her I'd like to know what the doctor says and I'd like to discuss the matter further to later decide whether he really needed them.

I am open to the fact that this incident (particularly disregard of the need for parental consent) could have been a fluke. Perhaps that group is not accustomed to parents considering refusing treatments -- and they didn't know how to deal with it. Maybe they were more concerned about how professional they would appear to the staff at Children's than how satisfied they left their customers -- they should have left that unknown up to me, though.

Great place to go, very fast and clean. The Staff is very nice and professional

Top notch staff and excellent care.

From experience, it seems they only help some of the medical staff feel more comfortable. The outcome of the X-rays in question would have been humorous if the incident had not caused so much stress and distrust: We were left with a handful of conflicting diagnosis by every "expert" doctor, nurse, and radiologist that looked at them. Not a confidence builder that they were necessary or helpful! Regardless, they should have sought my consent and trust to get them in the first place; I probably would have agreed.
